Before & After: How to Accentuate Your Eyebrows

The brows are the anchor for your face.  They ground your look and create a frame to make your eyes the focus.  Some may not realize the importance of your brows when getting ready and sometimes it is just not enough to keep them groomed.  Many women have never filled in their brows before. Depending on your shape, texture and color, filling them in can make all the difference.

A lot of women over emphasize the inner part of their brows but where most women need the definition is in the tail.  Extending the tail of your brow to equal the length of your eyes helps create symmetry and accentuate the shape.  It can also help create the illusion of an arch when your natural brow may not have one.

It can be tough to choose the right shade of pencil or powder to fill in your brows.  If you are a blonde or redhead, be sure to choose one that is one shade darker than your hair color.  If you are darker, choose two shades lighter than your hair color.  Sometimes women with jet black hair, a brown shade may be too warm depending on their skin tone.  In that case, try a gray or charcoal shade to fill in your sparse areas.

Brushing through your brows with a clean mascara wand may be needed to prep them before filling in.  This will help bring out the natural shape of your brows, giving you an easier shape to trace and make you truly aware of where may or may not need it.  I suggest starting with the bottom portion of your brows to establish the shape.  Then begin filling in by using short, feathered strokes moving in the same direction as how your hair grows.  Avoid the "drawn on" look by using a light hand while applying and don't forget an essential rule in makeup - blend, blend, blend.

With the roller coaster ride of brow trends throughout the decades, we have definitely moved out of the thin and over plucked brows of the 90s and have ushered in a trend of full and natural brows.  It may be hard to get used the way you look when you first fill them in but I must warn you, once you've gone for the brows, you won't be able to go without them.
