Easy DIY: Upholstered Stool

It's amazing what we can do when we have a tight decoration budget. Right now, I have to focus on other aspects of my life; I have to save money and keep in mind my priorities. But at the same time, I want my apartment to look good and to feel like a home. So I've been asking myself: what can I do to decorate without spending money?

First, I looked around and analyzed what I had in hands. I saw two boring stools on my balcony; I've never truly liked them. I bought them a while a go at Target for 10 bucks each. Not special; just black and simple stools. Then, I started thinking: maybe I could reupholster them? I don't have much experience on that, but I decided to give it a try anyway.

I worked with these materials:

  • Stool
  • Fabric
  • Scissor
  • Staple gun
  • Screwdriver

I turned my stool upside down and discovered that would pretty easy to remove the simple upholstery. I first unscrewed the bottom of it. This part was easy peasy. The top of my stool looked like this:

Then, I removed all the staples. This part was a little boring, but the fun part was about to begin. The "naked" top looked like this:

Finally, the fun part: choose and cut the fabric! I measured it based on the size of the top of the stool:

Now, just staple the fabric on the bottom part. It doesn't need to be perfect; after all, no one will see this part of the stool anyway.

Little tip: don't buy the cheapest staple gun you find. I made that mistake and, as you will see on the next picture, it doesn't do a very good job. I borrowed a better one from a friend and stapled the fabric all over again.

Then, I just screwed the pieces together again, and vĂ³ila:

A brand new stool! I didn't spend one cent to make this project - I already had the fabric as well. It is also very simple; it took me around 40 minutes to make the whole thing.

Before and after:

This is the magic of DIYs projects. You create something unique, sometimes using things that you already had. Just be creative and don't be afraid of trying new things!
