4 Summer Resolutions for Fun Lovers


We've all heard of a New Year's Resolution... but how many of us have actually taken the time to create a "Summer Resolution"?  It's true... it exists and you may benefit from it more than you think.  A summer resolution could serve as good half way mark checkpoint to see how you're doing since your NYE declarations... but we've compiled 4 guilt-free, simple, completely seperate from your NYE promises- summer resolutions for the fun lovers out there.  Don't worry...non fun lovers are welcomed too!

1. Be Who You Want & Do What You Want

Question yourself. We don't mean question yourself as in "Why did I buy this ugly bikini?". We mean really question yourself.  Make this summer your time for getting to know who you are. What do you like? What do you want to do? Who do you want to be?  Don't be afraid to tailor it for JUST this specific summer.  Summer is the time where all life is bloomed, living , and enjoying.  Become one with the bloomed trees, young grasshopper.

 

 
2.  Remove All Limits
 
Break yourself free of limits this summer.  Go to concerts, play a little beer pong, listen to music on a deck with friends all night whether you're young or a little older- do what you feel like doing (as long as it's not detrimental to you or those around you, of course).  Join the rowing club, learn to play golf, learn to surf, learn to knit, join a crossfit class, dance in the rain...  Stop working so hard or work harder than usual.. whatever those shackles called limits that you've placed on yourself are - BE FREE of them.
 

 
3. Explore, Explore, Explore!
 
You don't have to travel the world in order to be an explorer.  Why not declare to explore your own state?  Or pick a state and vow to explore at least one city in it.  Completely. Try the restaurants, meet the people, go to the movies, go to a local bar there.  Have fun!  Exploring doesn't always imply traveling either... going to new venues like a library you've been meaning to visit, a local play, or even volunteering to help coach a kids' soccer team are all forms of exploration.
 



4. Make a Summer Bucket List

Now that you have an idea of who you want to be this summer and what you want to do, write it down! Make a summer bucket list of all the things you want to accomplish by end of summer. They can be large goals like- "Buying a house" or not so large goals like- "Finally sing karaoke alone".  Make a goal to finally visit a place you've never been or to finally paint the kitchen. The choice is yours! The list could be as long or short as you like as well as- as safe or daring as you'd like... but make sure you have real intentions on accomplishing them.  Don't forget to add "Subscribe to and read every article on Well, Hello Pretty".  ;-)

Why fight the mall crowds? Gilt gives you sale alerts for hot brands so you can buy a great new necklace or blouse with your phone, then track the order as it makes its way to your home.
 
“After a long day in front of the computer working, I don’t want to stay in my office to shop online, so I’ll check it as a way to wind down at night — or when I’m in line at the grocery store,” says Beth O’Keefe, a writer in Chicago. “They once had an amazing sale on my favorite flip-flops when I was on a trip without my computer. Thanks to the Gilt app, I didn’t have to miss out.”

 
Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List (iPhone, Android)
Search for the perfect enchilada or chicken noodle soup recipe from this foodie site’s database — which features over 30,000 recipes — and then watch as it creates an aisle-by-aisle ingredients list. Back at home, follow the recipe right from your phone. (No more stained cookbook pages!)
 
“Sometimes I search for a recipe by the main ingredient, depending on whatever is in the fridge, or by fun categories like party menus or fancy cocktails,” says Monica Gilmore, a communications consultant in Hoodsport, Wash. “It also allows me to send the shopping list to my husband if he’s already out — that saves me a ton of trips into town.”

 
AroundMe (iPhone)
When you’re in an unfamiliar neighborhood, you may not have the patience to drive around in search of a gas station or takeout joint. Instead, pull up this app, which will find the closest bank, post office, restaurant, grocery store and more. Then browse to choose the one you want and you’ll get a map with the business’ phone number and directions to get you there ASAP. “AroundMe is one of my most useful apps,” says Natalie Gingerich Mackenzie, a writer in Syracuse, N.Y. “It’s like a phone book, map and GPS — all in one.

 
TripIt (iPhone, Android)
Gone are the days of printing out every flight, cruise, and hotel and dinner reservation confirmation. This app compiles all your itineraries so you can look them up with a touch. Plus, many airlines now let you scan your phone as your boarding pass.
 
“I love how all my trips are now paperless — it’s better for the environment, and I don’t have to worry about stuffing my purse full of papers,” says Linda Gregory, a teacher in Battle Creek, Mich.
 
 
 
Dropbox (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry)
This file-sharing app acts as a go-between for your phone and computers. Save your cell’s videos and photos to Dropbox to access them from your computer later, and open documents, presentations and spreadsheets you stored there from your desktop.
 
“I used to email myself photos or important information to have that data on my phone, but not anymore,” says Crispin Young, a graphic designer in Hood River, Ore. “Dropbox works like a hard drive, so I can access files I saved from home or work — no matter where I am.”

5 Top Tips from Hollywood Makeup Artists

 

Sure, stars like Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, and Blake Lively are blessed with natural beauty. But make no mistake; they don’t tumble out of bed and onto the red carpet. Instead, they rely on their beauty team to help play up their assets and disguise their less-than-perfect parts. We asked a few top makeup artists for their best tips on getting your gorgeous on.

 
1. Dress your eyes from inner to outer corner, not bottom to top.
Long ago, most makeup artists tossed out the technique of applying different shades of eye shadow to the lid, the crease and just under the brow bone. For a modern look, apply color in a subtle graduation of lighter to darker, working horizontally — not vertically — says Sharona Rahimian, co-owner of Style Bar Beverly Hills, a hair and makeup studio. A fresh summer nighttime look: a touch of gold on the inner corner of the eye, a wash of pink on the lid, and a swipe of a darker color — green, purple or bronze — on the outer third of the eye, extending just past the corner.

 
2. Blush believably. “Perfect blush application is all about placement,” says New York City makeup artist Raychel Wade. “Ideally, you want the burst of color to be directly on the apples of your cheeks. A foolproof way of finding this is to nestle the brush directly under your eye pupil and across from the tip of your nose, and blend up and out 2 inches.”

 
3. Boost a bold mouth with concealer. When Hollywood makeup artist Brett Freedman uses lipstick in shades like red, plum or berry on celebrities such as Katharine McPhee, Lucy Liu and Patricia Heaton, he preps their mouths by applying a pale concealer over their lip lines before applying liner and lipstick. “It gives you a really crisp lip that’s a very grown-up look,” he says. Touch up after dinner by blotting lips with a tissue, then reapplying concealer, lip liner and lipstick.

 
4. Wear false eyelashes for the flirtiest fringe. Mascara goes a long way in adding length and fullness to the lashes you have, but it takes some extra enhancement to achieve those lush red-carpet lashes. “Nothing opens up the eye and offers the density and glamour of false eyelashes,” says Kerry Herta, an Emmy-nominated makeup artist. It takes just a little practice to master strip lashes; just remember to trim the strip to fit the length of your eye, and apply the teeniest amount of adhesive. To blend your real lashes with the false ones, trace a very thin line of liquid eyeliner at the base of your lashes and apply a final coat of mascara.

 
5. Shimmer, but just a little. For a super-flattering incandescent look, skip the sparkle and glitter and go for subtle sheen. Apply a touch of a highlighting powder or cream in gold, pink or champagne on the tops of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose and just under your brow bone. If you have dark under-eye circles, you can add a dot of highlighter just under the center of your eyes too.

 
Don’t neglect your body. “Every inch of skin that’s exposed should have a bit of gleam to it,” says Freedman. That includes shoulders, arms, decolletage and collarbone. What’s more, a light veil of a luminescent body lotion “will scatter the light to hide flaws, like skin dimpling, and make every body part look a little more perfect,” he says. Secret tip: To make your legs look longer and leaner, put an extra stripe of highlighter up the front on your legs, along the shin bone.

Cure for Dry Skin: The Oil Cleansing Method


No surprise that every woman wants that smooth, glistening, soft skin!  Especially now that winter is over, although it doesn't feel like it in a lot of places yet. In about a month it will be the beginning of beach season and no one wants the dry, scaly winter skin making an appearance.  There are some people who have great skin all year and have to do minimal work to keep it that way..  but for the rest of us... THIS JUST IN.  Yes we know many beauty secrets to help dry skin such as drinking lots of water, using a great moisturizer, and eating good foods... but how many of us have heard of "Oil Cleansing".  It's one of those new but ancient alternative methods with claims that it's the most effective way to cleanse your skin naturally.

 Acne.org explains the benefits of oil cleansing:

“Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to desolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.”


But... does it work?

I've been trying it out for about 2 weeks now and I must say, I have noticed a surpirsing improvement.  I was skeptical at first because I couldn't make sense of how oil can remove the dirt and buildup on our skin. But, remember how we use oil to remove makeup and buildup and all that good stuff?... Trust me, you'll notice the difference.

It may take about a week for your skin to adjust to the change but here's a great beginner mixture and instruction:

If you are new to oil cleansing, it may take a couple of tries to figure out what blend of oils works best for you. To find out the best blend for you, I recommend starting with the suggested amounts below for your skin type and adjusting if needed and then adjust as you go along:
  • Oily Skin: 1/3 Castor Oil or Hazelnut Oil and 2/3 Olive, Sunflower or other oil
  • Combination Skin: 1/4 Castor or Hazelnut Oil and 3/4 Olive, Sunflower or other oil
  • Dry Skin: All nourishing oils like olive oil, or a very small amount of Castor/Hazelnut Oil added to the nourishing oils.
  • Experiment with coconut oil, almond oil, and tea tree oil if you'd like!
You will likely have to experiment to find the perfect ratio and combination of oils.

To cleanse your face:
Massage oil into your skin until skin is saturated.  Let oil sit for 10 minutes and then apply a washcloth dampened with hot tap water over your face for about 1 minute or until it cools in order to allow it to steam. Rinse

To cleanse your body:
Massage oil into your skin until saturated. Let oil sit for 10 minutes and then rinse off in the shower.

New Makeup Trick For Radiant Skin!


Anyone who knows me knows that my style of doing makeup is all about glowing skin. I’m a dewy skin addict! Personally I think it’s the prettiest finish that skin can have. I usually accomplish it by highlighters or shimmers but I recently found a new way that leaves the skin gorgeous and photographs beautifully. I found a new way to use one of my favorite products – NARS multiples. The multiple is a product manufactured by NARS that comes in cream stick form. It can be used on the eyes, cheeks, or lips; it’s called the multiple due to its multi-purpose use.





I experimented with a multiple in the color G Spot and found that when used underneath foundation it gives a lit from within glow. Usually I use a multiple after foundation and powder, but when I used it before foundation it gave an effortless glow that I found stunning. After moisturizer and primer apply the NARS multiple to the high points of the cheeks and the temples of the forehead and then apply foundation and the rest of the your makeup as usual.
I tested it out on a model for a recent shoot that I did, and found that it photographs wonderfully and made the skin look radiant.  This is a technique that I will be using on my brides and on models for a long time. I have included some of the final shots from the shoot in this post so that you can see the results for yourself which are gorgeous.

Foods to Eat for Glowing Skin



Naturally beautiful and glowing skin is something we all desire and it's not an impossible feat.  Add these foods to your diet to help increase your natural glow and produce flawless, beautiful skin.


Tomatoes

Tomatoes are red because of a phytochemical in them called "Lycopene".  Lycopene is believed to possibly lower an acne-promoting hormone. Alan Logan, a naturopathic doctor and author of The Clear Skin Diet (Cumberland House), suggests including tomato-based foods (such as sauce and tomato juice) in your diet between three and five times per week.



Berries

Deeply colored berries such as blueberries and cherries are loaded with antioxidants.  Antioxidants help your body fight off blemishes.  The more severe your acne, the lower your levels of blood antioxidants, says Logan.






Oily Fish

An international study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that people who had a diet high in fish had less skin wrinkling.  That might be because the Omega-3 Fatty acids found in fish are known to slow down the wrinkling process.  Logan recommends that acne sufferers consume four to five servings of oily fish per week to treat the condition.  If that's too much fish, try taking fish oil supplements.


Brown Rice
Check the packaging of your skin products and you're likely to see ceramides in the list of ingredients. These lipid molecules, which help your skin maintain its moisture, can also be found in foods such as brown rice. When you eat naturally occurring ceramides, they get incorporated into the outer layer of your skin and help it maintain its hydration, says Logan.

Natural Hair Wonder Product


It's no secret that I'm addicted to wearing hair extensions and have been for over 10 years - loves it! What some people don't know is that under all of those weave tracks lurks a head full of natural hair. I've been natural for some time now and every few months I rock my natural locks. One of my favorite products for my hair is Mixed Chicks Hair Silk. I love the Hair Silk  serum because it's great if I want to wear my hair in an afro or if I choose to do a silk out. For those of you who don't know what a silk out is, it's when you straighten your natural hair through thermal styling; my tool of choice is a flat iron. I recently wore my hair both ways but I will show you how fabulous Mixed Chicks Hair Silk is for an effective silk out. Although my hair is baby fine, I have a lot of it and it's VERY resistant to heat. The product really aids in smoothing my hair and leaves it super soft.



Below are photos of my hair results when using Mixed Chick Hair Silk when my hair is air dried and results after being silked out with a flat iron. For the silk out I took 1" sections and turned my flat iron up to 400 degrees. Section by section I smoothed the hair out from root to tip. The serum coats the hair and gives it great shine.
